You can now check your NHIF contributions online without visiting an office. This guide shows you exactly how to view your statement and balance on the NHIF self-care portal.
What is NHIF Self-Care Portal?
NHIF Self-Care is an online portal where members can access their accounts. You can check how much you’ve contributed. See your current balance and status. Download or print your statement. Update your personal details. Register dependants online. All these services are available 24/7 from your phone or computer.
Why Check Your NHIF Statement?
Know if your contributions are up to date. Verify your employer is remitting your money. Check your eligibility for medical services. Download statements needed for loans or visa applications. Ensure your account is active before hospital visits. Track your contribution history for records.
What You Need
NHIF membership number. National ID number. Active phone number registered with NHIF. Internet connection. Web browser on phone or computer. If you don’t have a membership number yet, you need to register at NHIF first.
Step 1: Open the NHIF Website
Launch your web browser. Type www.nhif.or.ke in the address bar. Press Enter to load the page. Wait for the NHIF homepage to appear. Look for a green and white website design with NHIF logo.
Example: Make sure the address says “nhif.or.ke” not any other website claiming to be NHIF.
Step 2: Find Self-Care Portal Link
On the NHIF homepage, look at the top menu. Find a link that says “Self-Care Portal” or “Member Portal”. It might also be under “Services” menu. Click on this link once.
Example: If you can’t find it on the menu, scroll down—there’s usually a section for “Online Services” with a link to Self-Care.
Step 3: Go to Login Page
A new page will open—the Self-Care login page. You’ll see boxes asking for login details. Don’t try to log in yet if this is your first time. Look for a link that says “Register” or “Sign Up”. Click on it to create an account.
Example: If you already registered before, skip to Step 8 and just log in with your details.
Step 4: Register for Self-Care (First Time Only)
On the registration page, you’ll see several boxes to fill. Enter your NHIF membership number in the first box. Type your national ID number. Enter your phone number—use the one registered with NHIF.
Example:
- Membership Number: 123456789
- ID Number: 12345678
- Phone: 0712345678
Step 5: Create Password
Think of a strong password you’ll remember. Type it in the “Password” box. Password should be at least 8 characters long. Use a mix of capital letters, small letters, and numbers. Type the same password again in “Confirm Password” box.
Example: Good password: Nhif2026 Bad password: 12345678
Step 6: Complete Registration
Click the checkbox to agree to terms and conditions. Complete any security check shown (CAPTCHA). Click the “Submit” or “Register” button. Wait for confirmation message. You might receive an SMS with activation code. Enter the code if prompted.
Step 7: Verify Your Account
Check your phone for an SMS from NHIF. The message contains a verification code. Enter this code on the website where shown. Click “Verify” or “Confirm”. Your account is now active and ready to use.
Example: SMS might say: “Your NHIF verification code is 456789”. Enter 456789 in the verification box.
Step 8: Log In to Self-Care
Go back to the Self-Care login page. In the “Membership Number” box, enter your NHIF number. In the “Password” box, enter the password you created. Click “Login” or “Sign In” button. Wait a few seconds for the page to load.
Example: If you forgot your password, click “Forgot Password” and follow instructions to reset it.
Step 9: View Your Dashboard
After logging in, you’ll see your personal dashboard. The dashboard shows your basic information. You’ll see your name and membership details. Look for menu options on the left or top. Find the option that says “Statement” or “Contributions”.
Step 10: Click on Statement
Find and click on “View Statement” or “Contribution Statement”. A new page will load showing your contributions. You’ll see a table with dates and amounts. The table shows every payment made to your account.
Example: The statement page might have tabs like “Summary” and “Detailed”. Click “Detailed” to see all transactions.
Step 11: Read Your Statement
The statement shows important information in columns. Date: when each contribution was made. Amount Paid: how much was contributed. Receipt Number: proof of payment. Balance: your running balance. Status: whether account is active or dormant.
Example: If you see “KES 500” with date “December 2025”, it means KES 500 was paid in December 2025.
Step 12: Check Total Balance
Look for a section showing your total balance. This tells you if you’re up to date with payments. If balance is zero or positive, you’re compliant. If it shows a negative number, you have arrears. Active status means you can access medical services.
Example: Balance: KES 0 Status: Active means you’re fully paid and compliant.
Step 13: Download Your Statement
Look for a button that says “Download Statement” or “Print Statement”. Click this button. Choose the date range you want. For example, last 6 months or full history. Click “Download” or “Generate”. The statement will download as a PDF file.
Example: Select “From: January 2025” and “To: December 2025” to get one year’s statement.
Step 14: Save or Print Statement
Open the downloaded PDF file. Check that all details are correct. Save the file to your phone or computer. You can also print it if you have a printer. Keep it for your records or use it where needed.
Understanding Your Statement

Compliance Status: Shows if you’re eligible for services. Active means you’re okay. Dormant means you haven’t paid recently.
Last Payment Date: When your last contribution was received. Should be within the current month or last month.
